Being a Great Fighter Falls in Line with Being a Great Active Listener.

One of the attributes of being a great fighter, relies on a person being a great active listener. Actively listening to someone is different from hearing someone and fighting against someone is different from being in a fight with them. In hearing another person, sound is just going in your ears, it is not a mental skill where you are weighing everything they are giving you. Active listening requires a different skill. In this, you act accordingly to what the person is telling you or suggesting and pay attention to all the small cues. An example of this is being aware of a person's tone of voice, eye contact, mannerisms, the flow of their speech, what they say, what they do not say, and being aware of their physical habits and how they change when certain matters are brought up. It is a mental attribute. If you are 100 percent present when you are with someone in conversation, you will be present to your adversary when they are launching an attack your way. You will use that day to day knowledge because your brain will be wired for it, leading you to translate that way of being into your fighting. You will move according to how your adversary moves and even be able to anticipate their movements before they are finished. Your awareness will be trained to notice and take advantage of every small detail they present to you. An example of this is, your opponent unconsciously blinking before they start an attack or doing a gesture before they move in.

If you are fighting against someone, you are just throwing any move that comes to mind and not observing the other persons flow and moving accordingly. In fighting with someone, you are in relationship with them. They throw a kick or punch, and you respond to that by either moving out the way or attacking simultaneously with what they give you. You become one with them, that is how you beat them. When they attack you, do not be afraid of their blows, welcome it and respond with the tools you have been practicing with. Of course, it is easier said than done. Responding accurately is work and requires arduous training, but it is worth it. You are retraining your nervous system and muscles to flow and react in a new way, without thinking.

Whether it be in listening or fighting, if you try and go at these two things without putting any action into it, the whole engagement will be useless and unsuccessful. Be aware of being active in the small things, because it will broaden your awareness and aid you in the bigger events.
