Most people think being insecure is a bad state to be in. It is only a poor state if there is no ambition behind it. That feeling will keep you on your toes, helping you to think non stop on ways to improve on your game, but action must support it. If it does not, you will not progress in the matter. Insecurities will keep you up at night, never giving you the peace or comfort to be complacent in the arena you are having issues. As you probably pieced together, this does not only apply for martial arts, but every endeavor you may get into in life.
Most of the greatest athletes and successful people feel like this, that is why they practice and work at their craft like mad men. That thought of not being prepared, someone out doing them in skill, speed, or strength bothers them to the point that they cannot sit still on their sofa. Their insecurities place a fire underneath their butt. The thing that made Michael Jordan start to shine, was when he got rejected from the basketball team in high school. He started practicing like a mad man over that summer (and somehow willed himself to grow), and got chosen to be on the team the next season, because of his hard work. He loved basketball and the insecurity of not being good enough to be on the team drove him to the extreme.
Bruce Lee, even though some people think he was only an actor, was a very serious martial artist. He would not only train the techniques he wanted to master, but he would find out what muscles were involved in that movement and strengthen it. As well as the nervous system in the body, and the way to get the best out of the brain in that activity. On top of that, he would go around to different dojo's in America and ask the authority figure in the school to spar with the best student. He would have the teachers give him permission to do that, and sometimes the teacher would want to spar him after seeing his superior skills. The teacher would then lose to him as well. No one could beat him towards the latter part of his life when he started to assimilate and adjust to all these different styles. Bruce never felt comfortable just sitting down and doing one thing, he would be doing 4-5 things simultaneously, because he said, his insecurities about losing a fight was always on his mind. That is what drove Michael Jordan, Bruce Lee, and other great legends to their peak.
