The Art of Play and How It Affects Your Skills in Everything You Do.

In the disciplined world of martial arts, the concept of play often seems like a contradiction. Yet, it's precisely this element of play that can dramatically enhance a martial artist's ability not only in the dojo but in all aspects of life. This blog explores the transformative power of play in martial arts, particularly through the lenses of self-defense and sparring, and how these lessons extend beyond the mats into everyday life.

Why Play Matters in Martial Arts

Play is fundamentally about exploration and experimentation—two key aspects that are often underemphasized in traditional martial arts training. When martial artists engage in playful practice, they're encouraged to test boundaries, innovate, and find personal expression through movement. This kind of exploration fosters a deep understanding of the art and one’s self.

Play isn’t just fun; it’s a potent educational tool. It stimulates the brain, opening new neural ...

The Brain and Body’s Secret Medicine.

Today, I want to share with you a perspective that transcends the conventional view of exercise and movement in martial arts. It’s not just about staying in shape or mastering techniques; it's about embracing movement as a form of medicine. This concept, coupled with mindful nutrition, can transform and heal your body, brain, enabling you to move with unprecedented efficiency and grace.

Movement as Medicine

Each movement in martial arts is deliberate and full of purpose. Beyond physical fitness, these movements enhance your body's natural healing processes. The stretching, the kicks, the blocks - every motion helps to release toxins, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation, contributing to faster recovery and better health.

Mental Clarity and Emotional Balance

Martial arts isn’t just a physical journey; it's profoundly mental and emotional. The focus required in each form or technique promotes mental clarity, while the discipline of regular practice improves emotio...

Don’t Fight The Future

Today, I want to discuss an important lesson that I've learned throughout my years of training: Don't fight the future.

As martial artists, we strive to be in tune with our surroundings and adapt to any situation. However, when we try to resist the changes that are happening around us, we put ourselves at a disadvantage. Whether it's in our personal lives or in the martial arts world, resisting change will only lead to being left behind and struggling to maintain the past.

As the saying goes, "the only constant in life is change." We must learn to embrace it and flow with what life is giving us. This is especially important in the ever-evolving martial arts landscape. The techniques, styles, and philosophies that were effective in the past may no longer be relevant in today's world.

As martial artists, we should strive to stay current and adapt to new training methods, equipment, and styles. This doesn't mean that we should abandon our traditional roots, but rather, integrate new te...

Don’t Compete With My End Result, Compete With My Process

In the realm of martial arts and beyond, the allure of immediate success often tempts many. It’s a common sight: individuals gazing at the pinnacle of achievement, yearning to leap directly to the summit without climbing the mountain. This mindset, however, overlooks the essence of true accomplishment—the process. The journey towards mastery, whether in martial arts, business, or personal development, is paved with challenges, learning, and growth. To aim solely at the end result is to disregard the foundation that makes success sustainable and meaningful.

The issue arises when individuals, observing someone else's success, dive into competition without understanding the depth of commitment and struggle that went into achieving that state. Competing with someone's end result without embracing the process leads to frustration. It’s akin to trying to replicate the splendor of a mature tree without planting the seed and nurturing its growth. Success in martial arts, as in life, is not...

What a Great Coach Does Is Interrupt The Pattern That You Usually Move To

Patterns are what we all move to. If you follow a person around for a month you will be able to see where their life is going and if they will be successful in the future. The people we have in our lives aid in the support of strengthening those patterns. So we must look around and see who we allow in our lives. Are they happy with their lives and where they want to be or are they losers?

Coaches know how to interrupt patterns that you feel trapped in or may not even be aware of. It may be a way of thinking that keeps on giving you results that you do not want. Or habits that were ingrained into you as a kid, maybe from your parents or childhood friends. When your coach points it out you may be angry and want to fight against what he is saying to you. Whether it be in your mind or vocally.

It is natural to get mad at your parents or coaches when they are trying to stop you from behaving a certain way. However, they are helping you to transform your way of thinking and being, ...

The Moment You Get To The Point Where You Do Not Want To Train Or Do Something Anymore.

The saying, winners never quit and quitters never win is a solid fact. When we start something new there is excitement and electricity in our bodies, that fuel comes from our passion for the endeavor we are getting into. However, after some time we lose our excitement due to hardships or boredom. We may also realize how green we are and lose hope when we see how long the journey is as well as the hours we have to put into the activity.

Martial arts and lifting weights is a great examples of this. At first, someone might inspire you, because you see how great they are and you want to express yourself like them. You then take the initial steps to make the picture in your head a reality. After a while your body starts to ache or gets bruised, then personal matters in your life come up and take your attention away from your goal. Now, this can be for anything you desire to accomplish. Here’s the time that you have to make a decision, do you want to stay focused on this journey and make a...

Are You Able To Sleep at Night?

We all have dreams and aspirations, but not all of us have the courage to pursue them. For some, fear and self-doubt are the biggest obstacles standing in the way of success. They are haunted by the what-ifs and the maybes, and they are filled with regret for not taking the chances that could have changed their lives.

At night, when the world is quiet and the mind is free to wander, these individuals often find themselves tossing and turning in their beds. Their thoughts are consumed with the opportunities they let slip away, the risks they didn't take, and the paths not taken. They are unable to sleep, knowing that they let fear hold them back from pursuing their dreams.

Winners, on the other hand, have a different mindset. They are not afraid to take chances and risk failure. They understand that setbacks are part of the journey towards success, and that every failure is an opportunity to learn and grow. They take action, even when it's uncomfortable or scary, and they are not afra...

If The People Around You Aren’t Saying, “What The Hell?!,” You Aren’t Training Right.

As a teenager and adult I always found myself training to the extent that I did not have a certain place, time, or day that I would dedicate to excelling in my craft. I would do it when ever the time made itself available. Therefore I would train daily in opportune or inopportune locations.

I could be walking, sitting, driving, or watching television. I always find a way to squeeze training into what I’m doing. You are probably wondering how you can squeeze in training while you drive?… Easy, when it rains wind shield wipers can be used to practice your timing when anticipating your opponent’s movement. I will talk about this in depth, during a future Master Class. You will be amazed how your speed will increase, even if you think you are a slow mover.

Anyway, the friends, family members, and strangers I am around are always saying, what the hell?! If people are not saying that around you, you are not putting the hours into mastering the thing you love. You must be consumed b...

How Thinking Differently Can Make You Surpass Other People As A Martial Artist And Person

It is usually the people who are considered oddballs that end up changing the world and inspiring others. They are mostly loners because no one understands them. The great thing about these people is that if they put their mind to something, they will probably be leaders in that thing. The reason why is because their minds process information differently.

Many people saw computers and were told what it was created for. Bill Gates was a nerdy awkward kid that saw a computer and envisioned windows and created Microsoft. His brain does not work like everyone else, so to others, he may have appeared like a loser and someone you wanted to avoid, but that is usually life. It hides the gems so they can focus on what they were created to do, without distractions from other entities.

Bruce Lee studied Wing Chun for a little bit and created his own fighting system, using his original training as a foundation to his style. Many thought he was full of it for creating his own style until they c...

The Same Mind That Created The Problem Is Not The Same Mind That Will Solve It.

When you have a problem that your mind has created, it is smart to seek outside counsel to assist you with it. Or the other option is to alter your state of consciousness with meditation, it changes the frequency of your brain and gives you an altered state of awareness. The thing is that you do not want to try and solve the same problem with the mind that created it, because it cannot. That mind needs to think differently and more creatively to have an answer for that issue.

A great example of this is not knowing how to fight. You can think all day long about how to attack a potential opponent that may start with you, but more than likely it will not work because there are many variations that could pop up during the altercation that will change the outcome you had in your head. You would need someone more experienced to guide you into a new way of thinking and moving to best your adversary. This coach will teach you techniques that will help you be fluid enough that if your att...
